Shutters vs Curtains: Which is Better for Your Home?

Shutters and curtains can radically slash your energy bills. Studies have proven this to be true. By simply closing these window coverings at night, you can trap in heat and reduce the need for heaters. Keeping them open during the day can also bring in heat and light, minimising the need for air conditioners and artificial lights.
This is especially useful in Australia, where a variety of climates can be experienced—from the temperate climate of Wollongong in the Illawarra Region of NSW, to the tropical climate of Cairns in Queensland.
But between the two window coverings, which one is best for your house?
To answer this question, you need to know both the advantages and disadvantages of each window covering option.

Curtains
Disadvantages

  • Easily fade – Curtains, even the heavy-duty ones, are highly prone to fading and tear. This is an unfortunate fact that you need to face, as they’re made of fabric.
  • Costly to maintain – They need regular cleaning. An uncleaned curtain will become dirty over time, which can result to sanitary problems.

Advantages

  • Formal – They look very formal and add elegance to any room.
  • Lower installation cost – Curtain installations cost lesser compared to shutter installations.
  • Inexpensive to change – You can conveniently change the drapes and match them with the season or occasion.

Shutters
Disadvantages

  • Less formal – They may look less formal compared to curtains.
  • High installation cost – On average, they’ll cost more than a regular curtain set up.

Advantages

  • Good insulation – Shutters are great insulators. They are even better than blinds. This is because they can fully fit into window frames, no matter the shape or size.
  • Long lasting –Shutters are durable and can be permanently fixed on your windows. They also last long and have a lifespan of up to 20 years.
  • Low maintenance – They are very easy to maintain, with upkeep only involving wiping away of dust. They also have a finish that is resistant to stains, scratches and dents.
  • Cost-effective – The cost you will shoulder from installing plantation shutters is a small price to pay for its high lifetime value due to its durability and low maintenance requirements.
  • Stylish – They can add style to your house. They may seem like simple additions to a home, but they can dramatically improve the look of a room. Shutters now come in different colours and finishes to better suit your home’s design.

Shutters were first used in the 1500s to keep out the cold as well as light from the outside. It was only in the late 16th century that curtains appeared. Even with the emergence of drapes and luxurious curtains, shutters still remained the best option when it came to window coverings. Compared to curtains, shutters simply provided more advantages to every home. Elizabethan houses back then found them to be very helpful, and until now they’re still the window covering of choice for most homes.

4 Reasons Roller Blinds Make Excellent Window Treatments

Nothing subtly adds appeal and flair to a room more than window treatments. Although primarily used for practical purposes, window treatments are greatly appreciated for their ability to improve a home’s beauty, comfort and style. One type of window treatment that is widely preferred by many homeowners are roller blinds.

Simple they may seem, roller blinds actually bring a host of benefits to homes. Here are only some of the reasons they make an excellent choice for your windows.

Simple yet elegant

If you’re after a window treatment that seamlessly combines simplicity and elegance, roller blinds are your best option. Ideal for modern and minimalist-themed homes, this classy window covering adds beauty to a room without grabbing too much attention. They’re available in a range of colours and patterns, as well as fabric choices, which means you’re sure to find one that suits your home and personality best. Some of the most common fabric types for roller blinds include translucent, sunscreen and blockout fabrics.

Provides privacy

Although the colourful lifestyle of areas such as Wollongong and the Illawarra region can be inspiring, there are times when homeowners just want private moments to de-stress and unwind. At times like this, roller blinds can be great life-savers. Simply lower your blinds down and you can instantly enjoy the quiet, peace and privacy of your home.

Easy to Use

With the various operating systems offered today, roller blinds have become no-fuss window treatments that are very simple to use. Some blinds come with the classic standard chain drive and the motorised option. This means you can quickly open or close your window treatment in any part of the house with just a touch of a button.

Saves Energy

Since roller blinds, especially those made of blockout fabrics, can effectively protect you from the sun’s glare and heat, it’s easy to maintain comfortable temperatures at home and keep your cooling units from working too hard. As a result, your power consumption lowers, helping you save energy and money.

With these impressive characteristics, there’s no reason why you can’t choose roller blinds for your home.

And when it comes to picking the perfect blinds for your home, you can never go wrong with Suttle Shades. Provider of top quality internal and external window coverings, including blinds, shades, awnings and plantation shutters in Wollongong and the greater Illawarra region, Suttle Shades can be your partner in transforming and beautifying your home one window at a time.

4 Kinds of Energy-efficient Window Treatments for Your Home

Skyrocketing electric bills can cause a major financial headache for homeowners. With huge energy bills, means chunks of money go down the drain. But did you know there’s a simple way to cut back on energy consumption? It doesn’t require anything complicated. No. It only involves using blinds and shutters, or a few other window coverings. How can window treatments transform your home from an energy hog to an energy-efficient space? There are three ways below.

1. During winter, the right window treatments can prevent warm air from escaping. You get a nice, toasty and comfortable home without cranking up your heater.

2. When summer time comes, it can do the same thing but in opposite. Proper window treatments help your room remain cool, cutting back on air conditioning costs.

3. A smart window placement or design partnered with the perfect treatment can also fill your home with natural light, minimising energy usage.

So, how to choose the right window treatments? We’ve done the research for you. Below are different kinds of window coverings and their usefulness in reducing energy intake.

1. Blinds – Pleated, vertical, Roman, roller or Venetian blinds in Illawarra, each one assists in preventing heat from gaining too much access to your home. There are two main types homeowners can choose from: Interior blinds – attached inside the home, the opening can be controlled easily making it perfect for summer months. Users can control the amount of sunlight and heat that comes in. Exterior blinds – Placed outside, these are often made from aluminium, steel or wood. Roller types are a common form of exterior blinds. These usually don’t have slats and can only be raised or lowered. If lowered partially, it can provide shade inside the room; regulating its temperature and atmosphere.

2. Shades – Offering function, energy efficiency and style; shades are a popular choice to keep energy costs at a minimum. With a myriad of styles, you’ll have to exercise a keen eye in going for the functional types. Plain ones are great for style and simple needs. Designer shades are also aesthetically pleasing and functional, but can be pricey. Solar shades are ideal for providing energy efficiency because they block out the sun without completely obscuring the view. Dual shades are also helpful. Made up of a reflective and an absorbent side, it reflects the heat of the sun away from the window.

3. Shutters – The most expensive of these options, shutters offer advantages in a variety of ways. For one, they generate additional value to your home. Plantation shutters in Wollongong for instance, became popular in Australia during the 80s. They look beautiful and work well in controlling the amount of sunshine and air inside a home. Apart from this, shutters are also favoured since they offer an extra layer of security.

4. Awnings – South and West-facing windows benefit greatly from awnings. Placed properly, expect up to 65-75% reduction in heat, especially during summer. Synthetic awnings are water resistant and keep mildew from building up. There are also those designed with slats to allow heat circulation. Retractable awnings are available in the market as well. These are great for winter. You can pull them out of the way to let some sunshine inside a room and heat it up.

Choosing the right window treatment can have a tremendous effect in your energy usage. It’s best to identify the right type of window covering you need that offers the most advantages for your home at a reasonable cost. Need help in this department?
